    本句的难点在于句子的层次比较复杂，定语中嵌套了状语，状语中又嵌套定语。我们面对这种句子，先找主干。这个句子属于主系表结构，A useful definition of sth. is a compound，其中 added directly……属于过去分词短语作后置定语，修饰 compound。added 后面跟 by 短语表示 add 这一动作的发出者，added 后面跟 to 短语表示 add 这一动作的方向，added 后面跟 in 短语表示在哪种环境或者条件下发成的动作，as to affect……是修饰形容词 such 的，表示 such quantities 所带来的结果，但是 such …… as to do sth. 整个是修饰 quantities 的定语。句子成分划分没有办法指出谁修饰谁，但是我们自己在划分的时候一定要弄清楚修饰关系。
