本句的难点在于对 when 引导的从句的判断。这里很容易把 when approximately 95 percent of all species died 误解为时间状语从句，那么意思就容易被误解为 “当……的时候，规模最大的灭绝可能是……”，这样显然曲解了原文含义，而且也理解不通。其实 when 还可以引导定语从句，修饰前面出现过的先行词。如何进行判断 when 引导时间状语还是定语从句？ 1、看修饰关系。 如果 when 引导定语从句，则 when 前面会有表示时间的名词充当先行词；如果 when 引导时间状语从句，则 when 前面没有表示时间的名词，这时 when 就充当了描述时间的状语。 2、看 when 的翻译。 如果 when 引导定语从句，一般翻译为 “在那时”；如果 when 引导时间状语从句，一般翻译为“当……的时候”。可以根据不同的翻译来判断哪一种理解更符合句义。1
