    本句的难点在与寻找句子的主干：首先把各个修饰成分去掉，who 引导的定语从句修饰 artist，practiced by artists 是过去分词短语作定语修饰 high art ，as a high art 是对 sculpture 的进一步说明，作其同位语， among Americans in 1776 为状语，把这些修饰成分去掉后，句子的主干就很清晰了 “ But sculpture was not known ”。
