As more people become interested in history, this subject gains its popularity. It becomes a controversial topic that what is the main merit of study of history. Some people claim that the main benefit of historical investigations is dissipate the misunderstanding that there are remarkable differences between life of ancient people and the modern ones. However, regarding other merits which could serve as main benefits for the study of history, I could hardly agree with that opinion. The factors which could support my position are as follow.
First of all, collecting and analyzing knowledge and experiences of people who live in earlier times is generally regarded as the main function of historical research. The data from the fruit of researchers plays an instrumental role in promoting the development in the fields of science, art, education etc. That indicates that the prime benefit of historical study should be boosting development. For example, the Kepler Three Laws, which are the achievement of the scientist lived in earlier time and had been discovered by historians, still serve as key texts in space discoveries, it provide the ground of many scientific calculation in the field of astronomy and other science, and offer modern scientists with a head-start for them to implement new researches.
Additionally, taking historical facts as examples could reduce the possibility of making same mistake as ancient people. Historical study in that sense could benefit all kinds of people, ranging from ruler of nations to ordinary citizens. Learning the underlying factors of the Depression in 1930s, modern bankers and investors could preclude the possibility of devastating their enterprises. And learning the reasons for the collapse of ancient dynasties, the government today could be capable of making more favorable policies which could ensure the stabilization of the society. Those merits from historical study seem more significant than mere dispelling the illusions.
Admittedly, by reconstructing the conditions of ancestors, study of history could dissipate the misconceptions, and thus enrich people's knowledge and imagination about what is the life in earlier time like. People could benefit from the study in this way, however, dissipating the illusion will not obscure the significance of the merits of propelling development and avoiding mistakes.
In conclusion, regarding other functions of history study, the benefit for dissipating illusions must wait its turn after the merits of promoting development and eschewing mistakes.
