ISSUE94"Universities should require every student to take a variety of courses outside the student's field of study because acquiring knowledge of various academic disciplines is the best way to become truly educated"。

I fundamentally agree with the claim that students should take a variety of courses outside the student's field of study. A contrary proposition would reflect a too narrow view of higher educations and its proper objectives.Nevertheless, extending the position to far might risk undermining the purpose of higher education.

The primary reason to support my viewpoint is that the purpose of higher education amounts to too far more from gaining knowledge and ability to excel in one's professional career.Higher education should also facilitates an understanding of oneself, tolerance and respect to others' viewpoints.Course in sociology and psychology would serve these ends.Higher education should also provide students insights and prospective on one's place in a society and in physical and metaphysical worlds.Courses in philosophy ,theology and natural sciences such as physics and astronomy could help students to achieve this goal.In addition, students also need to obtain aesthetic appreciations through the courses in arts, literature and music.

Another reason for my viewpoint lies in the fact that since various disciplines are related, the study of courses outside a student's own field might benefit the study of their majors. As it is known, every subject does not exist independently. They relate to others to one extent or another. For instance,a student of theoretical physics needs a mastery of some mathematical courses. If a physical-science student do not study the course"Functional Analysis",he/she would not understand quantum mechanics thoroughly. Moreover,to have sufficient mastery of quantum field theory and general relativity one must study the course"Differential Geometry".Thus, learning some courses in other disciplines would benefit students.

Moreover, requiring students to study courses only in their major field may cause some serious problems.Above all,it may limit the development of a student's interests. Not all the students know with certainty which fields they are interested in and can do well in at the beginning of the college life.If universities could allow students to choose courses freely,it would be an opportunity for them to find out their true interests. And students would be more motivated to study and fully develop their potentials. It is very helpful for students' futures.

Nevertheless,it is too far that emphasizing a broad educational experience might risk undermining the objective of higher eduction.A student who mere dabbles in a hodge-podge of academic offerings, becomes a dilettante----lacking enough knowledge or experience in a single area to offer anything valuable. Therefore, students should be careful not to overextend or risk defeating the purpose of higher eduction.

In sum, college students should strike a proper balance in one's educational pursuits.Certainly, students should strive to excel in the specific requirements of their major course of study. However, they should also take a variety of courses outside their field.By earnestly pursuing a  broad educational experience, one acquires the capacities not only to succeed in one's professional career, but also to find out the purpose and meaning in that career as well as understand and appreciate the world and other people.
