ISSUE34"Instead of requiring students to take courses in a variety of disciplines—that is, courses ranging from the arts and the humanities to the physical and biological sciences—colleges and universities should allow students to enroll only in those courses that will help prepare them for jobs in their chosen fields. Such concentration is necessary in today's increasingly workoriented society"。

The speaker claims that educational institutions should actively encourage their students to choose fields of study in which jobs are plentiful. I concede that students should consider employment prospects when they choose their major. However, in my view, the speaker's claim is too simplistic.

In some way, education is an investment for the future. In this kind of investment, students put money and time into educational institution with the expectation of gaining knowledge and capacity to excel in their future professional career. And the best return for this investment is to find a job with high income, which a student is interested in. So when it comes to the choice of major, it is a natural view to consider employment future. For example, the IT area has been booming since 1990s, which changes humans' life style dramatically and creates great wealth. As a response, college students preferred computer science when they chose their majors.

However, we would confront several problems if students' choice of the major is only dependent on the employment future of the major. For one thing, we cannot predict the employment prospects of each field. Because today's occupational adjustments are more frequently than the past, it is a mission impossible to anticipate the employment prospects of majors. For another, if all the students choose fields of study in which jobs are plentiful, there would be several defects.First of all, nearly all the people choose relatively few fields in which jobs are plentiful. As a result, the number of job seeker in these fields are far more than the number of people that these fields actually required. And it will not only lead to the decline of the average income of the fields, but also result in a great number of waste of human resources. Second, if students choose fields of study merely according to their current employment prospects, it may limit the development of students' interest and gift. Not all the students know with certainty which fields they are interested in and can do well at the beginning of the college life. We cannot count one to succeed in a field in which he is not interested in. The scarcity of interest can lead to a disappearance of creativity too.

Therefore, to solve this dilemma, we find a better approach: before studying in the graduate school, college students should choose major of study according to their interests and gifts. As a saying goes, interest is the best teacher. And it would lead students to find the professional fields which are the most suitable for them. Moreover, after graduating from the college, they had better to find a job first and be working for two or three years. During that time, they try to find the favorable professional orientation. Determining the work orientation too early may do disservice to developing students' potential.

In sum, when it comes to the choice of fields of study, students should find a balance between their interests and current employment prospects of the fields.
