Society should make efforts to save endangered species only if the potential extinction of those species is the result of human activities. [Specific Task Instruction: Write a response in which you discuss your views on the policy and explain your reasoning for the position you take. In developing and supporting your position, you should consider the possible consequences of implementing the policy and explain how these consequences shape your position.]

ISSUE121"At various times in the geological past, many species have become extinct as a result of natural, rather than human, processes. Thus, there is no justification for society to make extraordinary efforts, especially at a great cost in money and jobs, to save endangered species"。

What is the limit of our responsibility to protect endangered animals? This statement involves morality, conscience and self-protection.On balance, however,in my view we humans should try to save endangered animals whether their potential extinction are results of human activities.

As I see it,there are three fundamental arguments for imposing us at least some responsibilities to protect endangered species. The first argument has to do culpability.According to this argument,to the extent that the endangerment is result of anthropogenic events such as deforestation and nuclear pollution,we should take some affirmative measures to save endangered species whose survival we have place in jeopardy.

The second has to do with the research values of these species. The endangered animals have a significant meaning for researchers of biology and ecology.Researchers are willing to continue to seek the answers of origination and evolution of life.If we could adopt some measures to save endangered animals,it will be helpful for scientists to discover the myths of the origination and evolution of life on the earth.

The third argument is appealing to self-protection.First,animal kingdoms is a complicated matrix of independent relationships ,in which each species depends on many other species for its own survival.Severing some certain relationship, such as preys and predators, might set into a motion of extinctions that may ultimately endanger ourselves.Additionally, biodiversity provides some ecosystem services that are often invisible. It plays a vital role in regulation the chemistry of our atmosphere, pollination crops and generating water supplies.Biodiversity involves directly recycling nutrients and providing fertile soils. Thus,to protect endangered animals is to protect humans.

On the other hand, the speaker? claim is not feasible. This claim rests on an unreasonable assumption that we humans have the capacity to distinguish which kinds of extinctions are results of human behaviours and which are not.The development of technology not only improve our life, but amplify our power to intervene and destruct the nature, such as the adverse effects of nuclear catastrophes on species and environments.Under many circumstances,we humans,a part of biological chain,do not realise that our behaviours have damaged the surroundings a lot. Thus,we have no explicit standard to discern the potential extinctions of which animals are caused by humans.

Moreover, there are two shortcomings in the speaker? claim.First, many species become extinct due to anthropogenic factors, nevertheless,we take a blind eye to that with an indifferent innocence.Additionally, granted that some extinctions are due to natural forces, however,if humans do not take any measures, such extinctions may finally endanger humans' own survival.

In sum, even though some potential extinctions of species are results of natural selections rather than anthropogenic factors. However,we human should still strive for saving endangered animals in view of our redemption and responsibility, the value of these species and our own survival.
