Samson Mulder
As people rely more and more on technology to solve problems, the ability of humans to think for themselves will surely deteriorate. [Specific Task Instruction: Write a response in which you discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the statement and explain your reasoning for the position you take. In developing and supporting your position, you should consider ways in which the statement might or might not hold true and explain how these considerations shape your position.]

Technology is the basis of the modern society, and it is everywhere in our
life, no one can avoid using them. While some people worries about technology
would be harm to their abilities to think, many others have already found out
ways to use technology to help them think.
Google, for example, is the biggest search engine in the world. There are
billions search requests submitted on Google website every day. On New York
Times, a famous news website, journalists have written several articles to reveal
whether using Google Search would deteriorate human's thinking. The result
shows some of the volunteers' thinking abilities do deteriorate, while others
don't. The result seems not consequential, but after studied by several
Professors in UC Berkley, the result shows that, the way they use Google Search
would affect their memory differently.
People in the first group, when they need a Zip code, they just type
"Cedar Rapids Zip Code", then the Google would give them the result,
by this way, they will never remember the Zip Code of Cedar Rapids, sometimes
they would even forget the zip code of the cities they’ve remembered. On the
other group, for example, one of they use Google to help them analyze the
currency, he typed 1 US dollar (USD) in Chinese Yuan (CNY), Google would give
him the exchange rate of 1 USD to CNY, also Google would plot the trends of the
recent exchange rate; when he received the result, they do statistic analyze to
see if he should buy CNY, and at which rate he should buy. The two different people
use Google for different purpose and they have different result. So I think it
is not technology itself but the way they use it which affect their thoughts.
For programmers, they use technology a lot. When they tried to make the
system work before the deadline, they would "steal" others' code,
because most of the codes are similar between different projects. When they are
trying to implement a quick sort algorithm, there are two ways to do it. First
way is simple, Google it, then copy - paste, and deploy. It is easy and fast,
but if they copy code frequently, they would lose the ability of thinking
independently.
From my observation, I think technology is not the main reason for those
whose ability to think independently deteriorate. After taking the advantage of
technology, I think we can focus more on our major, as long as we think more on
how to solving problems instead of collecting data, or exchanging ideas in lieu
of copy others idea, our ability to think will never deteriorate.
