In reality, however, formal education tends to restrain our minds and spirits rather than set them free"和老GRE的ISSUE104 "It is primarily through formal education that a culture tries to perpetuate the ideas it favors and discredit the ideas it fears"可以相互借鉴。分析前首先要了解formal education的内容,其包括以下五部分:formal education包括:primary education、secondary education、higher education、adult education、alternative education、indigenous education。在分析的过程中,可以从人们对解放思想和精神的需求、教育设置的目的、正式教育的具体形式、正式教育对人们的正负面影响、解放或束缚思想和精神的具体行为等方面展开思考。
1. 请列举几个国家(例如:中国、美国)的教育制度以及内容,并对比这些制度的设置目的、具体方式、对学生思想和精神的影响以及效果。
回答: 中国:higher education之前基本都是以教授知识为主,基本功扎实,但是受过这种教育的学生,整体创新能力不高,习惯被动接受机械模仿; 美国:从primary education开始鼓励创新,但仍旧会有约束,大学教育更是很严格,学生要学习的东西很多,整体创新能力尚可
2. 教育的目的是否是“解放思想和精神”,解放思想和精神对于学生、社会、国际以及教育本身的发展有哪些正负面影响?请举例并简述。
回答: “解放思想和精神“只是教育的部分目的,不是全部,还应包括基本知识的获取,技能的掌握,与他人的交流能力,理解各种文化的能力等等;正面:学生-思维开放,利于发现新事物,个性生活,社会-整体快速向前发展,繁荣,教育-多方面发展,新东西不断出现;负面:学生,基础知识不牢靠,异想天开,社会-不利于社会稳定,很多偏激的行为思想以为是free的,教育-不成系统,比较散乱
3. 现实情况下,正式教育培养学生的目的有哪些?给学生传递了哪些信息?这些信息对学生会产生哪些作用?请举例并简述。
回答: 掌握基本知识,掌握某些技能-工作-成为社会的正常一份子;信息:学到的知识要有用,要为了以后的工作而学习,学的好学的多才是优秀的人;作用:使得学生普遍比较功利,扎堆热门学科,努力竞争成为最好的,痛苦,根本没有解放思想之说eg:为了上好的大学,拼命学习已经学了无数遍的知识,浪费时间和精力,没有时间做自己喜欢做的事情,思想是受restrained
4. 教育中的哪些内容会起到解放思想和精神的作用,哪些内容会束缚思想和精神?请举例并简述。
回答: 解放:学完基础知识之后,一些创新性项目,艺术哲学知识的学习 束缚:重复地做已经会的东西,就为了达到熟练的程度已取得高分

The objectives and various formations of education have long been discussed throughout the world, and no definite answers are given, because it is such a complex debate, involving  religions,  economic bachground and even political interventions. As for me, I agree that fomal education is indeed necessary for most citizens and render us more civilian than before, although in some areas and field, it is rigid to restrain our inmagination.For the reason that formal education has the responsibility not only to provide citizens a place to think freely, but also to impart knowledge and experience and cultivate future doctors, engineerings, laws and leaders for the society, it is destined to be excluded from the totally liberal education. Seeing from the aspects of the whole society and history,  fomal education play such an essential role that modern society may not come into being without it. Just imagine our prihistoric ancestors, who could thnk freely but possessed such little materials that they had to worried about the food and security all the time, it is the formal education system which stores fomer knowledge and experience for the next generation that make today's prosperous world.Admittely, the formal education, indeed,  prevent us from more advanced liberty. Before the discovery of the Theory of  Relativity, students who have learnt that the classical mechanics may  be convinced by his teacher that it is absolutely true in class, which may inhibit the further progress in physics. What is more, nowadays, fomal education seems to stress more on the job seeking of the students and courses vary with the job market changed, subsequently, students are crowded in the so-called "promising" field like economy, laws, or medicie, no matter they are interested in them or not. Thus other aspects of the system of the knowledge falls behind. The ultimate result may be the recession in our mind and soal.Even though there are so many negtive influences brought by the formal education, we still need it in some stage of our growth. For the sense that, without basic knowledge about the nature, the society and ourselves, to think freely is just like to think irrationally and even madly. For example, children should be advised to go to school to learn some elementary things like the basic spelling, reading and mathematic skills with their peers there. In addion, being with one's counterparts is another vital function of fomal education, which may be absent in other forms of education like home-education. In summary, formal education has initiated the modern civilization, for its important function in reserving, imparting and spreading and exchanging knowlege, and when face with its disadvantages in several situations, like the strict regulations in high school or college, we may reach the conclusion that we are to receive formal education to gain the fundamental skills and then, when admitted in a higher form of education,  teachers there may have a resposibility to tell various kinds of aspects of a theory and let the students themselves to judge which is right and which is wrong, thus which they are willing to believe in.
