【IBT机经-1】Do you agree or disagree with the following statement: In order to succeed, you should be more like others than be different from everyone else.
I don't agree with the statement since I think one should at least be different from others in two aspects to achieve success.
The first and most important is persistence. One need to be more persistent than others to get accomplishments. For instance, when I was in high school, almost all of my classmates have the dream to go to a top university. But many just dreamed all day long while I was always diligent. Thus I made my dream come true.
The second point is, there would be more chances to succeed if you have a monopoly, as Peter Thiel said, especially to an entrepreneur. When one thinks of a promising idea that has never been applied in a market by others, then it's more likely for the person to succeed by entering into the blue sea.
General characteristics of successful persons include but not limited to self-confidence, persistence, love of thinking, embracing change, while there are also specific traits for some. For example, Steve Jobs had always been introvert, which was not regarded as an advantage generally but had brought more time for him to think about his products and make them perfect.
What if we become more like others?
On the one hand, it would be beneficial to learn about the general characteristics of the successful persons and make them your own ones. Take myself for example. Last year, I had a chance to take part in a design project by Audi company. I was hesitating and wondering if I was competent enough when my friend, who's about the same level as me, applied for project and finally got admitted. Things could have been different if I had the same confidence. And obstacles would no longer be the excuse in our way so that success comes more easily.
On the other hand, if we just stay in the comfortable state like most people do and don't intend to improve ourselves or even don't have the confidence of doing so, we would always in the same place and success would never come.
All in all, we need to be selective when learning from others so as to succeed.
What if we are just different from others?
In one aspect, being more pioneering in a promising area than others would make us approach success. Let's look at Adora, the girl who got the venture from YC by establishing the US household service online. She has already achieved a great success. Just as Thiel says, to take a monopoly would build up absolute competitive advantages. And Adora has taken the leading step and built her monopoly in that market.
In another, we should sometimes keep consistence with others since there could be disadvantages if we do contrarily, especially inside a team. When a team has already reached consensus to carry out a solution, it would be hard and even harmful for you to act by yourself and keep different processes from others.
