ISSUE230 "College students -- and people in general -- prefer to follow directions rather than make their own decisions. Therefore, colleges should eliminate as many choices as possible in order to offer students clear direction"和其相似的一道题目是老GRE的ISSUE234 "Most people prefer restrictions and regulations to absolute freedom of choice ,although they would probably deny such a preference"。

The speaker asserts that college students prefer following directions to make their own decisions, and therefore colleges and universities should specify all required courses and eliminate elective courses in order to provide clear guidance for students. In my view, the speaker? reason and conclusion are both specious. It may appear that students often prefer following others' directions, and the college and university administrators know which courses are best for them. However, upon further reflection it would become evident that following the speaker? advice would do disservice to students and to higher education.

As for the speaker? reason,I concede that under certain circumstances college students prefer following directions to make their own decisions. For instance, when the freshmen in the college heed the instructors' directions, they prefer not making decisions. Moreover, many students are natural followers who know that they function best when colleges make decisions for them. However,I find the speaker? reason internally illogical.Yielding voluntarily to the directions of others for the purpose of serving one? own interests---such as gaining a college degree---is itself an expression of one? free preference to determine what is best for oneself.Accordingly,I find the speaker? claim unconvincing.

I turn next to the speaker? conclusion that colleges and universities should specify all required courses and eliminate elective courses in order to provide clear guidance.I agree that I agree that colleges and universities should stress required course because it may be the most effective and economical way for college students to gain fundamental knowledge and skills to excel in a filed. However, eliminating elective courses might risk violating the students' freedom of choice, which is natural human right, and undermining the purpose of high education.First of all, when it comes to decisions about curriculum choice, most students rather than college administrators should be the final decision-makers.If students could choose course according to their interests and individual needs, they would be motivated to study.Additionally, divesting the students of their curriculum choice might defeat the objective of higher education. To fulfill the purpose of higher education, students should be educated to think critically and independently. For achieving the goals above, students must be educated to make decisions according their conditions.

Nevertheless, the speaker may retort that students would respond to freedom of choice regarding curriculum by enrolling in as few course as possible, and in the course whose instructors are lenient graders.Yet,students who abuse their freedom in these ways would finally fall by the wayside. And other students who use the freedom of choice regarding courses would excel in their future career life and make contributions to the society.

In sum,my intuition is that college students prefer autonomy in the course choice.Depriving students of freedom of choice would backfire.Instead, college and universities should provide a variety of course including not only required course and elective course, and let students be the final decision-makers
