本题为老GRE中的ISSUE36原题，和老GRE中的ISSUE241很相似（An individual's greatness cannot be judged objectively by his or her contemporaries; the most objective evaluators of a person's greatness are people who belong to a later time），都是在讨论评价者“合理性”的问题。实际情况是同代人和后代都在对“某人”进行评价，二者的视角、关注点、参考信息等因素都存在不同，这些不同也就影响了评价的效果。在分析的时候可以根据不同领域、不同事件以及不同的标准来展开思路。

1. 在你的印象中不同领域和不同层次的伟人有什么共性和个性？可结合具体事例简述。

1.不同领域的伟人：共性：都做了不是人皆可做的、有利于世界和人类发展的事情。个性：艺术领域：给人类创造了美的享受和震撼。科学领域：提高了人类的生活质量或者有利于世界的和谐发展。商业领域：提高了人类的生活质量，创造了价值。
2.不同层次的伟人：1.造福周围民众。2.造福本国。3.造福世界。
2. 评判一个人是否伟大的时候，有没有一个普遍适用的标准？如果有，那么这个标准中包括哪些内容？如果没有，那应当如何去评判？
回答：
有。1.是否人人均可做到。2.是否有利于世界和人类的发展。
3. 后世人的评判和同代人评判有什么共性和区别？在这些区别中有哪些是后世人具有的优势，而且是同代人没有办法弥补的？
回答：
后世人的评判经过了时间的检验。还有时代和观念的变化。其中时间检验这一条是同代人不能弥补的。
4. 是否存在后代评价和同代人的评价差别很大的人物？造成差别的原因是什么？请结合具体事例说明。
回答：
存在。时间、观念。例如梵高。再例如原子弹。

Who can judge the greatness of individuals, their contemperary or
people live after them? The speaker claims that only people live after
them can decide the antecedent's greatness.Basically, I agree with what the speaker says.
Before we discuss this problem, we must decide what are the criterions to judge whether an accomplishment is great. Firstly, it must be accomplished uniquely, that means it is not a task that everyone could do. Secondly, it must have some significant positive effect to development of the world and human. We may already see that both these criterions need examination of time.
Firstly, whether a task or work is unique. Consider in the realm of arts. The competation of first Nobel literature prize is between Tolstoy and another novelist, and Tolstoy failed. In that days, Tolstoy's rival is a famous people, even more famous than Tolstoy. However, after time passed, Tolstoy becaming a great writer even of entire history, but few people knew his rival's name. Because after a long time, it is proved that no one can repeat Tolstoy's great work War and Peace.
Secondly, whether a task or wark is important. Here when we talk about important, we mean 'positive important', that is, benefit to development of human and world. Yes, there are some people who greatly risk the world, their work have huge effect to the process of human development, but they hardly be considered as great ones. When we discuss about this problem, one famous examples jumped into my brain:Socrates. His contemporary people holds an totally different view to them from currently. The believe that he is a crazy person, and try to risk their country. However, after time's examination, people live after him finally believe that he was a great philosophor.
There is another factor of a task's effect: many times the effect cannot appears immediately. For instance, there was a great socialist named Yinchu Ma, who suggested that China should control population. However, he was suspected to have private purpose, even had been throw into prison. After his death, people now find that his idea was so wise that government adopted his idea, because what he said seemed impossible in his day. In this case, one's greatness must be examined by time.
I concede that many people was confirmed as great persons during their life time. However, their greatness still need time's prove. Even some great people were recognized by their contemporary, only after the history proved the fact can they be confirmed as great people. That means no matter what those individuals' reputation are during their life time, the history can prove or disprove what their contemporary named them.
After discussing the reasons listed above, we can have a safe conclusion that the claimer's statement is correct: individuals' greatness can only judged by their precedents.
