When it comes to a society's success, people are always disagree in the importance of it. Some people believe that a society's success can merely measureed by the well-being of its people, thus it has an equal position with the individuals' well-being; at the same time, others think that the success of the whole society's success is the only important thing, more important than its people's individual happiness. In my point of view, though society's whole success has significant importance, more critical thing for a society is the well-being of its people.
Firstly, let's focus on the criterions of success of a certain society. There are two of them: 1, the development of the society, including economical development and function of the society, and 2, what its people feels like. Consider the first criterion: the development. Undoubtly, if function of a society, such as education, government and legistate systems, being improved to a perfect point, its people would feel better. For example, if the education system became more effective and uninterested, the edcation resources could be allocated better, which certainly improve its people's happiness. That is to say, better social function means better well-being of people.
Secondly, when it comes to the latter part of the criterion 1, many people would say that economical development does not means its people's well-being. Admittedly, there are some examples to demonstrate that GDP is not a certain reflection on people's well-being. A telling example is a society whose people have a incredible difference in their income. The upper classes can live a luxury life, while lower classes cannot make live on theirselves. Thus, because of the upper classes' great income, the total GDP is increasing much more than the overall well-being of individuals, especially compared with people from the lower classes. However, a society with high GDP like this, without increasing well-being of all people, would never been called as a great society. Even if we neglect the factor democracy and humanity, which is a very important point in my view, it risks to fall in chaoes because the income difference is a natural source of unstablement.
Thirdly, the second criterion of society's success, which is about its people's own feeling, is self-proved with my view.
In sum, when talking about a society's success, the most important criterion is its people's well-being. If anyone defy this natural rule, he or she must risks the human value system of democracy and humanity, and finally lead to a social chaoes, with which a society definitely cannot been called "successful".
