When it comes to be a effective leader, especially a political leader, the different ideas concentrate on the question that wether a leader should abandon some principles in order to comprimise and listen to the public ideas. For me, I agree that an effective leader should listen to the public voice and shoud be ready to change his principle for to satisfy the public.
An effective political leader should listen to the public idea rather than insist on his own principle for the work of the a political leader is to serve the public. In any democratic countries, politic principle should serve to satisfy the public demand. Thus, to let his plan work out, a political leader has no reason to stand on the opposite side against the public. Through history, we have known the consequences of voilating the public's desire. The politcal leaders who held on his own principle to expand the empire may lose his chance to be the powerful again and even brought his politcal life to an end. We have learned the collapse of many great empires. The common reason for the expire of those once glory states is that the leader insisted on his own principle and ignored the public desire.
Also, when consider how a political leader becomes the leader, we know the reason why he should yield to public opinions. The premise of being an effective leader is the support from the public. In most countries, the political leaders are selected by the people. So it is the support from the massive people that the leader has the chance to lead the contries. To some extend, an effective leader cannot work without the support from the public. Thus, he should hold the support of the public by listenning to their opinions. Without the support, a leader may not be the leader again, let alone to be an effective leader.
It is true that an important quality of a great leader is to insistance, but it is hard to happen in the reality. Because the conditions are always changed, a effective leader should have the ability to alter his principle in order to meet the public's nees. Consider the transformation in China in the recent three decades. The leaders abondaned their belief in planning economy and turned to the revolution and openning. They meeted the basic needs of the public and gained public's confidence on their leadership. If they insisted on the original economic structure, China may become aother the Souviet Union,
In all, for a effective leader, lots of basic quality is demanded, but the most one is to alter his principle to satisfy the thoughts of the public. Only by this way, can a politcal leader remains his power and continue his political life.
