Should government focus on solving the immediate problems of today or trying to solve the anticipated problems of the future? I think that, government should mainly focus on solving the immediate problem and they should also pay attention to the anticipated problems of the future.
Most immediate problems of today are urgent, such as hunger, homeless and health problems. If government cannot solve these immediate problem, the society would crash. At 2004, a highly contagious virus called SARS was spread quickly in Beijing, the capital of China. After the first patient died only four days after being diagnosed, the public began to worry because hundreds suspicious infections were found during the next week. If it is not the government uses the military forces to build a hospital in the distanced suburb, moving advanced equipments to that hospital and isolated those people who are infected the virus, people would afraid to go out, then factories would stop work, shops has to be closed, the society would crash. So dealing with urgent problems, the government should focus on solving the immediate problems.
However, to plan how a city develops is a long term problem. How to make people live better, how to save some time on the way to work, how to easily find a shop when people need to buy stuffs. Those problems should be planned more scrutinized. An inappropriate location of a building would cause a consequent result, such as not enough bus for visitors, too much time spend on the way and not enough place to park cars. If such problems showed up, then they might need to pull down the building and select another place, and by doing this would cost a lot of money.
In addition, birth control is a long term problem, when there are two many people in the country, hunger, job requirement, and crime rate, a lot of problem would show up. In order to prevent the future problem, the only way is start from the early days. So as the environment control. Pollution is easy to be prevented, but when water or air had already been polluted, it is difficult to purify them. So for long term problems, the government should try to solve them ahead.
In sum, when the government facing an urgent problem, they should focus on solving the immediate problem, but there are also some long term problems that government should have a solution before the anticipated problems occurred.
