I totally agree with the statement that to assure success in any profession, those in power should step down after five years. A too-long term of office will bring more severe harm than its potiential benefits while a relatively short term can assure better leadership.
Some may argue that a new leader will have to spend around one year to adapt himself, so a five-year term is not sufficient to make a contribution. However, almost in any profession, a five-year term is quite enough to make a change for a leader. In addition, the relatively short term can make the leader aware of the time limit,. Therefore, compared with those in a long-term office, leaders with a short time in office will be more passionate in work and discreeet in making a decision,being afraid of making a mistake and having no chance to correct it. With a five-year term, the enterprise can benefit more because of a better leadership.
In contrast, a long-term office may cause severe problem. For instance, the top managers of the Enron Corporation have been in power for a long time. During their term, instead of making profits for other shareholders, they manipulate the price of Enron's shares to benefit theirselves. Their irresponsible acts finally lead the giant corporation to bankruptcy, which also caused severe unemployment. Not only in business, but in politics a long-term of office may cause problem, which might be a disaster for a country. The Red China since established, have been under the leadership of Mao Zedong for 27 years. The Cultural Reform which was advanced by Mao, led the country into great disorder. During that disaster, many of people were killed, including workers, scientists, engineers and even the national chairman, Liu Shaoqi. If there were a limit of a five-year term of office, this tragedy could have been avoided. Moreover, in other professions like government and education, the situation is quite similar.
To sum up, Lord Acton once said:"Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely." With a better limit on corruption, a five-year term of office can better exclude corruption and benefit the enterprise more.
