The speaker asserts that all faculties should spend time working outside the academic world in professions relevant to the courses they teach, so the quality of instruction at the college can improve. Admittedly, I think working outside academic world is helpful for teacher but also have some bad effect. What's more it is cannot improve the level of instruction.
In some sense, practical working is a good way for teachers to improve their teaching quality. If a art teacher work in a gallery, he could know what does the customers like, what do they think of art and what is the different between customers and artist. So he can tell the students like outside the artist world, how they can deal with the customers. Other than that, a teacher can interact into some funny things in their work place, so they can use it for an opening and make students more interest in his class.
However, working in companies will take teachers to much energy and they cannot do well in their class. Working is a hard thing, and if the teacher wants to learn something from the work place, he had better work hard. But if he work so hard, such as go to sleep at 3 o'clock or work five days a week, then it will have a bad effect on his teaching. The teacher may feel sleepy or tired in class and cannot reach his former level.
What's more, some subjects do not have a working place for the teacher. Such as the linguistic, mathematic, philosophy. The entire subject is based on theory and research. The real world is doing nothing with them. So, what can the teacher do is to study on the research, reading books and writing his or her idea. In this way, one can also improve his teaching skills and qualify.
In sum, working outside the academic world is not necessary for the teachers and it cannot improve their teaching ability. Even they work inside the academic world, reading more books, have more discussions with other teachers or students can also improve their teaching qualify.
