ISSUE34 Instead of requiring students to take courses in a variety of disciplines—that is, courses ranging from the arts and the humanities to the physical and biological sciences—colleges and universities should allow students to enroll only in those courses that will help prepare them for jobs in their chosen fields. Such concentration is necessary in today's increasingly workoriented society""ISSUE90 College students should be encouraged to pursue subjects that interest them rather than seek programs that promise entry into the job market""ISSUE201 The purpose of education should be to provide students with a value system, a standard, a set of ideas -- not to prepare them for a specific job"。

Should students base their choice of a study on the availability of jobs in that field. The author claims so. I agree with him because compromising to reality seem to the best choice in my argument. Again, it is possible that students may be not aware of what their interests lie in.
According to Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs, body need should be satisfied before self-actulization. It is to meet the body need that basing their choice of a field of study on the availability of jobs in that field. While it is self-actulization that basing their choice on their interet. In this sense, it is reasonable for students to sacrifice their interest for better living. After all, what a starving aritist would prefer a good painting to even an bad meal?
Moreover, nowadays, the unemployment rate is in a high level all over the world, creating a swelling pool of people searching for a shrinking number of job. In this case, it is almost impossible for a graduate to find a suitble job that is well-paid as well. Basing their choice of a field of work on the jobs in that field is nothing but expidency without alternative chocie. Otherwise, how can they live on their own?
Furthermore, who can say interest is not changable? In fact, if we manage to do something by several times, it is likely that we would be interested in it. On the contrary, if we fails to do the same thing by several times, we are likely to have a repugnance for it. if we never enter into a field of study, how can we say we cannot succeed in this field? In this sense, entering a field of study basing on the availablity of jobs in that field is not always a bad decision. In most times, whether it is a bad one is determined by chance.
All in all, I fundermetally agree with the speakers assertion that college students should base their choice of a field of study on the availability of jobs in that field. In that we are almost impossible to achieve our ideals, compromising to reality--or in other words, take risks entering a unknown field--is both pratical and advisable. Maybe it will brings about a big surprise.
