The speaker asserts
that imagination is a more valuable asset than experience. Because people are
able to free imagine without the constraints of established habits and attitude.
However, in my point of view, I hold that imagination and experience are the same
important elements for people. Under different circumstances, they just play
different roles.
Admittedly, when it comes to arts, humans cannot deny that imagination is often valuable than experience. Artists need imagination to help them construct their own styles which is essential to great artists. For example, Qibaishi, who was a very famous watercolor painter in China, was really good at drawing shrimps. To do this, he bought many shrimps and fed them in fishbowls. He looked at every subtle movement of the shrimps and looked for any better ways to drawing them. In this way, imagination helped him to make it. Without the constraints of precedents, Qibaishi became a great painter.
However, in the field of engineering, experience is more important than imagination. To resolve an engineering problem, experience is necessary but imagination isn't. I'd like to say, my major is electronic engineering. And when my teachers, my classmates and I try to resolve an engineering problem, we need to learn about what precedents have done before. So we usually have to seek much relational information via internet or in the library. And an excellent engineer must be an exceptional learner at the same time. In contrast to that, imagination is not as important as experience.
Finally, in many other fields, either of imagination and experience cannot be valuable without the other. Generally, experience play the basic role as fundamental knowledge and imagination is the source of innovation. In scientific fields, scholars who want to make breakthroughs often master the knowledge in his and even other field. Scientists have the ability to make new theories with the help of professional knowledge. Just think about these great scientists like Newton, Einstein, Franklin and so on, each of them was great scientist and mastered knowledge well.
To sum up, although people are able to free imagine without the constraints of established habits and attitude, it is invalid to convince me that imagination is a more valuable asset than experience. Imagination and experience are both valuable assets for human beings. People make a breakthrough with both his or her imagination and experience. So people cannot tell which one is more valuable than the other.
