    本句的难点在于对句子中 how long 引导的从句的理解，以及对多次出现的 determine 的理解。首先第一个 how long 出现在 an idea of 后面，how long……整个内容做了介词of的宾语；第二个 how long 出现在 determining后面，how long……整个内容做了现在分词的宾语，这两个 how long 都是引导了宾语从句。句子中三个determine 都是表示 “测定” 的意思，而不是我们常见的 “决定”、“确定” 等含义。弄清楚了这些关键点，整个句子就比较容易理解了。
