The speaker claims that all faculty should go out to do some work which related to their course. Therefore, it can outline the quality of teaching in college and university. In fact I agree with the most statement. In my opinion, it is necessary for a professor to do some practice for his study. But it depends upon whether the subject is demanded the practice or not.
To begin with, some subjects don’t call for work experiences. Some subjects have a great need for working experiences. For example, in the communication field, whether the students or the teachers need much real practice of the course. In order to grasp the main knowledge about how to organize a large-scale performance, and how to operate a wonderful documentary, and so forth, the students need to know much about work experiences. That is why working outside the academic world is beneficial. This has the following advantages.
In the first place, if a professor works outside, he can get new concept and technology of the field that relate to his course. The professor will offer working experiences to his students, to make the students deeper understanding of the course, and to make the class more actively. For instance, as a fine and performing art professor, he or she needs lots of performance in the class. If he or she has performing job in peacetime, he or she will be more freely show the cases for his or her students. Moreover, from the professor's description, the students will more eager to take this program as their life career.
Secondly, with the recent increased competition, choose a suitable job is more crucial for the students. As the wealth of experiences in the workplace, the professor who works outside the academia can give his students more reference value of the proposed. The professor always keeps pace with the employment situation, wherefore he can analyze the employment needs of the professional. For example, in the media subject, the professor always spends a few minutes in every class to talk about the recent job market in media field and advanced. The students can ask whatever they concerned. In this way, the students will get the latest information from the experienced professor other than any other college courses.
In addition, the experienced professor has new insight of the program. And he can help the students to express their scholar articles with new direction. He may better interpretation of the disputed issues. As we all know that practice is the sole criterion for testing truth. So, the practical professor is easier to establish his credibility in academic area.
However, some subjects of academia are not suitable for such an approach. For example, the philosophy is a pure theory. It doesn't need too much work experiences and it’s not easy to find a suitable place to work. After all, the pure theory subjects need less work experience but more theoretical foundation. The professor should spend more time in reading papers and doing research.
To sum up, except for the certain subjects, such as philosophy, anthropology, literature and so on. The faculty should be demanded to spend some spare time working outside the academia in professions relevant to the program they teach.
