Students' success in the field they work in will bring good reputation to their alma maters. As a result, schools concern more and more about whether students studying a particular major will lead to students success. There is claim that educational institutions have a responsibility to dissuade students from pursuing fields of study in which they are unlikely to succeed. From my point of view, I strongly disagree with this statement. Since predicting students' future success is very difficult. Except professional knowledge, a broad understanding in other subjects and good personality traits also contribute to students' career success. I consider schools' trying to dissuade students from a certain study field as unwise, because it is almost impossible to predict whether a student will succeed in a certain field. In fact, it is very hard to predict the personal development of a certain student and the trends of a certain industry in the future. A student with poor academic record does not necessarily means he or she cannot make great achievement in career. Similarly, a rising industry with good reward may not remain its advantages in the next decade. My Siamese teacher Paul told us that when he was at the university, his teacher and parents thought that learning Siamese was not a good choice and they tried to change his mind, because few people were using Siamese. However, about ten years after his graduation, there is a rapid increasing demand for Siamese interpreters and teachers. More and more people go to Thailand for travelling and business. At the same time, Thailand films become more popular than before. Paul now is the head of Siamese training agency in our country. Paul's choice of studying Siamese is a key factor for his success, but people in 10 years ago could not predict his success. Selecting a field of study has big influence on a person's career, but have a broad understanding of other fields will benefit their work a lot. Take the financiers for example, their work not only requires the professional skills they learn in the school, like the mathematical model, statistics, fanciers need to learn about other industries. Because their customers comes from different industries and they need to make investment decisions in e-commerce, education field and so on. In academia, people with multidisciplinary study experience have great advantage in doing researches that invovles different discipline. Therefore, education institution should pay more attention to general education besides the choice of study major. Good personality traits also influence a person's success. Study shows sociable people are more likely to be successful in their work. My friend John was popular among classmates, he is nice and humorous, so many people like him and are willing to do a favor for him. Although his academic records are not very good, he found a job in a good company. And several years later, he became the manager of this company. John thought that his social skills helped him to get along with different colleagues and customers. If schools provide courses or environment to help students build better personality and improve their communication skill and team working spirits, their students will stand out from competition. Although I disagree educational institutions dissuade students from a certain field of study, I think it would be helpful if schools provide more information about different research fields and the job market while students are making decisions. In sum, success depends on many unpredictable factors, and field of study only does not decide the future. Thus, let students follow their interest, and schools should try to improve students' abilities to make them prepared for the career.
