The speaker claims that colleges and universities should require their students to study abroad at least one semester.I concede that studying abroad is helpful for college students in many aspects.However,in my view, whether studying abroad should be decided by students based on their own interests and conditions.
It is undeniable that studying abroad is beneficial for students' developments,such as appreciations of foreign cultures, accumulation of experiences and improvements of academic abilities.For instance,if a physics undergraduate who are interested in particle physics could gain an opportunity to visit and study in Linear Hadron Collider, he would widen his horizons, deepen his understanding of principles of particle physics and improve his academic ability.
Nevertheless,requiring all students to spend at least one semester on studying abroad is not feasible.First,who would afford the fees used in students' studying abroad?Governments,universities or students' families.It is too a huge expenditure for any of them to afford alone.Secondly,different countries usually have various educational systems.No one could make sure whether they are compatible.And mediating students' interests and colleges' regulation is also a herculean task.Thirdly,the personal safety of students would persecute colleges and universities.
Moreover,there are several shortcomings as follows, if colleges and universities force their students to study abroad.The first shortcomings is that students would choose the foreign universities whose fees are relatively low and educational system are analogous to theirs.If so,the purpose to appreciate various culture and improve the academic abilities would be undermined.The second one has to do with students' safety,studying abroad respectively raise the difficulty to guarantee the safety.The third flaws that some projects of studying abroad is of little.And they would disturb students' normal study.
Therefore,requiring students to spend at least one semester on studying abroad is not a good advice.To help students widen horizons and improve abilities,colleges and universities could invite some foreign renowned scholars to be visiting professors.So the foreign scholars could open some courses for domestic students.It would be convenient for regulating and quite economical.
In sum,I concede that studying in a foreign country would be beneficial for college students.However,studying abroad should be voluntary rather than compulsory.Students should make the decision based on their own interests and circumstances.Moreover,there are some alternative ways to wide students' horizons and improve the abilities.
