The speaker claims that the best way to ensure that students become truly educated is requiring university students to take a variety of course outside their major fields of study. I concede that the study of courses outside a student's own field can benefit the study of their majors. However, in my view, the speaker's claim is specious.

It is undeniable that various disciplines are so related that mastery of any specific area requires some knowledge about other areas. For example, a physical-science student can fully understand quantum field theory only by having a good command of some mathematical knowledge such as "functional analysis" and "differential geometry". A biologist cannot excel without understanding some knowledge of chemistry and computer programming. Also, even computer science is intrinsically tied to other areas, even some non-technical ones such as business, communication and media. So, a broad educational experience is conducive to study for one's major field.

However, the speaker's assertion that the best way to be truly educated is acquiring knowledge of various disciplines rests on an unsubstantiated assumption that knowledge stock of various disciplines is the standard for determining whether one is truly educated or not. From a functional sense, knowledge stock of various disciplines only involves the process for obtaining the knowledge. With today's era of highly developed computer technology, any individual's knowledge stock is so tiny when compared to the memory of a personal computer. Thus, the process for outputting knowledge, namely re-creation of the knowledge is more valuable than acquiring knowledge of various disciplines.

There are only two indispensable criterions for judging whether individual are truly educated. The first criterion is whether he has a mastery of scientific way of thinking. Only grasping it, a person can independently have a critical thinking . The second one is whether individual can acquire his conviction and realize the value of life through independent critical thinking. And a person cannot find the meaning of his life without gaining his belief and the value of life. Consequently, the ultimate purpose of education is to free the mind and the spirit. And acquiring knowledge of various disciplines is merely a method, rather than the purpose of education.

In sum, although requiring university students to take a variey of courses outside their major fields of study is helpful for students to gain knowledge, the meaning of "truly educated" amounts too far more than obtaining knowledge from various disciplines. The true education requires students to liberate their minds and the spirit.
