ISSUE170"The surest indicator of a great nation is not the achievements of its rulers, artists, or scientists, but the general welfare of all its people"。

A great nation is a compelling topic. The candidates of presidency convey his anticipation of shaping a image of a great nation in his speech. The writers expect a strong influence of his nation in his works. When it comes to ordinary people, their best wish for the country is to be a great nation. However, here comes the question: what is the standards of being a great nation? Does it reflect by its leaders' achievement in every field? or does is can be seen from ordinary life? To me, I embrace the idea that the standards of a great nation is always changing. Fixing it does not help us to better uderstand the definition of a great country.
First, the history has told us that humans judge a nation's success by the success of its great people.  In history class, we have learned that the feature of a great nation is a group of great people who can lead the country to be a success in the following field, military, art and science. For example. we have the idea that the Alexander Great was a military genius, and his acomplishment reflected how strong the Greek nation was at that time. We also learned that Britain was a titan in literature in the 16th century. Because every one know how William Shakspear's poets and scripts have influenced the English literature. History also told us, Italy in Renaissance was origins of scientific inventions since we know how Leonardo Da Vinci's evolution theory changed the idea about nature and human. It is true that the our knowledge about the great nations in the past comes from the great people, and to this extend, we can say those great people can represent their great nations.
However, when it comes to modern society, we focus on the living standards of ordinary people when we judge whether a nation can be seen as great. We care about the poverty line, the education resource and the food supply. We have taken these as the standards of a great nation unconsiously. For example, when we compare the northeuropean countries with those countries which are located in the North Africa. Most people will agree that Sweden is much better than the African countries. Because, we know that Swedish have a complete welfare cover system while the Africans are facing starvation and diseases. It is obvious that general welfare of its people has become the basic requirment of being a great nation. These days, it is likely we value the welfare more important than other things.
We have not discussed the relationship of individual accomplishment and the general welfare. Possibly, the achievment of individuals are based on the general welfare. For example, we find that scientific brakthrough happens more easily in a country where the education system covers most of its lands than a country where the governmental support for welfare is low. The increasing chance of education is the key to cultivate the great people. With more chance and no worry about life, can one start to think about his interest and then make contributions.
In fact, both great individuals and general welfare are presented the features of a great nation. But the successful individual lies on the complete welfare system. Thus, we should concentrate on both side when we consider how to shape a great nation.
