Because the important feature of culture is belongingness which determine whom people are. And this belongingness mainly comes from rituals and ceremonies.
First of all, belongingness derives from culture which rituals and ceremonies help define. Culture has been known to be unique with societies or groups of people. Different societies or groups usually have different cultures. For example, Confucian Culture has been existing in China for nearly two thousand years. And French people like freedom and equality. As contrary, gentleman is popular in English. Groups of people can find their own belongingness in these different cultures, which can help define a sense of who they are. American and Chinese festival can present two relevant cases for analysis. Thanksgiving Day is so important in the United States that people have holiday to celebrate it. Usually, family people will gather to share the Thanksgiving Day. And they will have a great dinner with a turkey. In this way, family people can communicate with each other and share their happiness and find their belongingness with each other. At the same time, China also has a traditional festival called the Spring Festival. Almost every people can celebrate the Spring Festival with their family. The Spring Festival displays a wide divergence of celebrating forms, ranging from the firecracker to Spring Festival couplets and Jiaozi. This festival was defined as prosperity and the best hope for the next years. In this way, Chinese people can enjoy the sense of belongingness to home and the sense of who they are. These are only two examples of why rituals and ceremonies can help define a culture and find the sense of who people are.
On the other hand, without rituals and ceremonies, societies and group of people have a diminished sense of who they are. Because in the process of rituals and ceremonies, people can find the culture of their own country and the belongingness to their country, which can help define the sense of who they are. Many group of people who lost their ritual and ceremonies will try to find them and the culture belonging to them. A good example of this viewpoint is Chinatown all over the world. Chinatown is the place where chinese people gather and live. The reason why exists Chinatown is that a few Chinese people lost their rituals and ceremonies in abroad. In oder to find their culture and the sense of who they are, the Chinese people gathered in the same place of the city to live in their own way. In Chinatown, we can not only find Chinese character, but also the Chinese rituals and ceremonies. For example, a huge surplus of people will celebrate traditional Chinese festival in Chinatown.
