ISSUE93"The concept of 'individual responsibility' is a necessary fiction. Although societies must hold individuals accountable for their own actions, people's behavior is largely determined by forces not of their own making",和老GRE的ISSUE156"Choice is an illusion. In reality, our lives are controlled by the society in which we live"有互通之处。

For a long time, people wonder what plays the most essential role in determining the behavior of people. Some believe in the power of mind: they are convinced that nothing is impossible; others argue it is the forces which are not of the own making of people that matters more. I agree with the latter point of view.
To begin with, there are two kinds of factors that can influence the behavior of people--the inner factors and the outer factors. The inner factor, such as characterastics determined by genes and the ability to discipline oneself, affect the behavior of people. At the same time, the outer factors, which can be as big as the society and as small as people around, influence the behavior of people.
Admittedly, the influence of inner factors does exist. On the one hand, characteristics, which are believed to be determined by genes to some extant, are fairly influential. An introverted person do not feel like talking to strangers and tend to hide their feelings. In contrast, an outraverted person are gregrarious, enjoying every minute spent with their friends. Also, a person who is capable to discipline himself or herself are more likely to fulfill their responsibility than those who are not so good at self-control. All these facts show that inner factors can have an impact on the hahavior of people. On the other hand, however, the effect of these inner factors are rather limited, when compared with the influence of outer factors.
Although not obviously observable, the influence of outer factors is overwelming and unevitable, as well as far-reaching and long-lasting. Family, as an example of the outer factors, can influence the children as long as they live. For example, investigations show that father-and-daughter relationship is very crutial to the amout of self-confidence the girl feel when she is with a boy in her adolescence. The influence even lasts into her marriage: it will influence her with the choice of a husband, her behavior in her marriage, and her attitude towards her marital life. It can effect her whole life, determing whether or not will she feel happy. Even a small family can be so influential, not to mention the effect of the vast society. Clearly, when a society is peaceful and in serenity, people are friendly to each other, willing to help at any time. Whereas in a society where crimes and cheat are prevalent, people will be alarmed which will lead to indifference in the whole society.
From the reasoing above, we can easily find that the outer factors, forces not of the own making of people, have a greater impact on the behavior of people than the inner factors. After the comparison, we can finally come to the conclusion that the behavior of people is largely determined by forces not of their own making. It is the outer factors that influence the behavior more.
