ISSUE5"A nation should require all its students to study the same national curriculum until they enter college rather than allow schools in different parts of the nation to determine which academic courses to offer"。
Curriculum means two things: the range of course from which students choose what subject matters to study, and a specific learning program. In the latter case, the curriculum collectively describes the teaching, learning, and assessment materials available for a given course of study. So, a typical curriculum before college includes communications, numeracy, information technology, and social skills units, with specific, specialized teaching of each. Therefore, it just provides a common knowledge foundation to the students, which has not much bearing on the where the school is.

Should a nation require all its students to study the same national curriculum until they enter college? The author is in favor of this proposition without reservation. After a comprehensive and dialectic analysis, I agree insofar as some common core curriculum would be provided nation widely, however, with reservation, I conceive that individual provinces and communities should have some freedom to augment some additional courses that they see fit; otherwise, a nation's educational system, even the nation's culture might be at risk in the long term.     A unified core curriculum in general education would be beneficial in a number of respects. First of all, a unified fundamental knowledge, social skills and moral education is necessary for every school students before they go to college. Just as the famous educator Allan Thwarts has said, the very purpose of true education is to enlighten people not only intelligently but also morally. Moral education is the foundation of a qualified citizen. And a basic knowledge will ensure the students grow up to become reasonably informed, productive members of the society. In addition, a unified course will provide great convenience for the universities and colleges: for the admission, the universities can have a standard benchmark to evaluate the students' competence in the core curriculums, which is the most decisive factor for their further education; for the administrators and lecturers of the university, they can easily select course materials for freshman that are neither below nor above their level of educational experience, thus the teaching conducted in the university will be stable and accessible for all students.     Moreover, a unified core curriculum guarantees the equity of education to a large extent. Just as the economists in favor of a laissez-faire system in which everyone can compete equally, I am strongly convinced that every citizen of a country have equal right to education: from students' level, educational equity give the poor students a chance to change their destiny; from the parents' level, they will not complain educational discrimination; from the social level as a whole, since everyone are educated equally, people with different background are possible to compete with each other. That is to say, educational equity can keep the dynamics of the society by introducing a constant competition. As a consequence, the society will never ossify and degrade into a hierarchical, hopeless world, and the society will become more democratic and thriving. History is replete with evidence to demonstrate this point. After the liberation, especially in recent 30 years, the Chinese government is sparing no effort in promoting the education equity, resultedly, now China has world's largest number of engineers and researchers, and the society is full of vigorous competition, which propels China's rapid economy growth.     However, a control over all the curriculums would undoubtedly pose certain problems, which might outweigh the benefits noted above. As we know, a country has diversified culture in different places. If all the courses are decided by authority inflexibly without giving any freedom to the local schools, many of the local culture will soon be vanished, which may possibly lead to a cultural chauvinism scenario. For example, California requires children at certain grade levels to learn about the history of particular ethic groups who make up the state's diverse population. A national curriculum might not allow for this feature, and California's youngsters would be worse off as a result of their ignorance about the traditions, values and cultural contributions of all the people whose citizenship they share.     Besides, any attempts that try to impose some ideology to the young generation by a federally sanctioned homogenization of curriculum should be prohibited. Although I maintain the same core curriculum nationwide, it should not degenerate into an ideological conquest to all students. All schools have a responsibility to find out and exterminate the sign of it.     From the analysis made above, students should be required to study the same core curriculums before they enter universities, however, a control over all the curriculums would be counterproductive. Therefore, I agree with the proposition with reservation: Only the core curriculums should be nation widely same.
