In this era of
rapid and technological changes that lead to increasing requirement to current
students, they should keep pace with the most advanced knowledge and at the same time find ways to make
some breakthroughs. Skepticism plays a significant role in absorbing knowledge and
developing critical thinking. I strong agree that students should be skeptic to
what they learn rather than passively accept, with some reservations about some
certain areas.

 

Skepticism is
the strength of society progress. Only through skeptic, can we have the opportunity to find
some other explanations to publicly accepted theories.  Many outstanding breakthroughs
just originated in skepticism and contribute greatly to human being's civilization. Without suspicious of the
prevailing view of catastrophist theory at Darwin's time, he cannot built the
theory of evolution of creatures; without the skepticism of Albert Einstein to
the limitation of Newton’s three laws of motion, it is entirely possible that
our understanding of the cosmos is still limited in three dimensional space.
Skepticism leads to curiosity and curiosity can encourage people to discover the answers. Sometimes,
skepticism not only leads to the academic achievements’, but also an indication of great
courage. Copernicus serves
the most representative example. The skepticism of heliocentric theory brought him not honor but persecution.
Without scientific belief and great
courage, no one will make any suspicion to dominant theory.

 

For students, skepticism
seems more important. If one can give his suspicion to what he has learned, no
matter right or wrong, it can clearly indicate his deep thinking of the
specific issue or problem. And that may serve as the origination of a creation.
In the process of thinking and reasoning, tight logic can be built, which can
benefit a person in the long run. Even though it is wrong, further explanation
by others can help him understand more impressively. Furthermore, when the students express their
questions, they also develop the skills of deduction and briefly expression. All of
these benefits cannot be attained by passive accepting.

 

However, even
though skepticism is vital and
beneficial to students, overemphasis will no doubt inverse these advantages.
Before skepticism, we must be rational that accepting is the base of suspicion.
We must firstly learn some basic
theories, principles and axioms as our
fundamental knowledge. If not, skeptics will change into sophistry, and contributes nothing to
one's growth. What's more, over-skepticism will make one focus on some less important points and
details, thus ignores the whole picture of a theory.

 

In conclusion, I
strongly agree to encourage students’ skepticisim, for it serves the force to pull society
make progresses. At the same time, it helps students to grasping knowledge more
completely and develops the critical thinking. However, we should also pay a
attention to the fact that accepting is the base of skepticism.
