Formal education, by definition, is what going through most of us life, including the time we spend in and knowledge we learn from elementary schools, junior schools, high schools, college or universities. Some would argue that people always get educated with some basic knowledges, which are quite simple and useful for open minding, and sometimes may even worsen that those educations we are got would likely to restrain our mind and spirit. However, after weighing the pros and cons of formal educations, I would prefer to think it in the ways that formal education will do help in open our mind and free our spirit, though it may need reform part of its from.Admittedly, formal education may limit out mind when people have a specific purpose like getting a certificates or admission to a job or school. It would not be hard to find such examples to illustrate this point. In China, if students want to get their chances to be admitted in their dream school, they have to attend Gaokao, a college entrance examination. For most students in this country, since their elementary school, their families and teachers mention the importance of the examination again and again. They compete with others from the moment they start in schools, all the knowledge they learn, no matter it was mathematics, english, poems or science, is for better answering the questions they meet in the exam papers. In this passafic situation, those formal education definitely restrain peoples' mind.However, no one could life in the world without any basic knowledges, that is to say, without formal education one just so simple-minded and naive, which is far from spirit-freeing. Just as known to all, in ancient time, people knows quite a little about the world they live in, the things the meet, the reason for any event happened around they, so they prefer to explain the world with what we called the myth. Those who did get any formal education will never be thought mind-free, even they did not learn formal knowledges. Moreover, freeing the minds and spirits is based on formal education one once got. Some great scientist we known, like Mikolaj Kopernik andGalileo Galilei, find some extremely amazing things and free peoples' mind based on what they learned by well educated in schools. If they did not formally educated, not a chance could they concluded the theory like sun is the center of the university. It is not difficult to got other examples to demonstrate this point.
