Historians have been studying history all the time; in the United States, US history is required for high school students, and colleges also require students to take classes on history or government. Why do people study history all the time? The arguer thinks people study history for the benefit of dispelling the illusion that people living now are significantly different from people who lived in earlier times. Personally, we are different from people in ancient times due to technology advancement and a better society. Technology have provided so much convenience in study, work and life that we become more innovative, efficient, and have more time to relax. In ancient times when there are no computers or electronic devices, learning was incredibly difficult for them. It was hard for people to share their opinions and learn from each other. On the contrary, we can search whatever we want to learn on the Internet:  MIT and other schools have open online lectures available to everyone. With invention of machines, we become increasingly efficient at work, therefore our work hours are reduced with more accomplishment. And thanks to technology, our life could not have been more convenient:  with the invention of refrigerators and microwaves we can store foods without spending hours to cook for every meal, therefore women have more time to relax and even able to work in addition to the housework. All these technology inventions have sparked further innovation and brought us a better life than people living in ancient times. According to Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs, with fulfilled physiological needs, people start to aim for psychological satisfactions. Before World War I, women couldn't vote. And many women were not dissatisfied with that situation. However, after the war, women strived for suffrage and equality with men. In addition, the African Americans were brought into the United States as slaves, as time advanced, many of them fought for freedom and equality. Our social values have changed compared with people living in older times. Although we have changed in many aspects compared with people living in ancient times, there are personalities and values that have remained constant through time. Like our ancestors, we value our friends and families. The development of communication allows us to get connected with people we cared about more than ever. And we still honor honesty, confidence, and other virtues. In addition, studying history have other benefits: we learn from the mistakes of our ancestors to be more successful; and by comparing our times with theirs, we can see our merits and demerits to advance to a better society and be more successful. In conclusion, studying history is not just for the benefit of dispelling the illusion of the differences, people and the society have changed a lot due to technology. Paradoxically, we have remained the same in some aspects.
