Should university require every student to take a variety of courses outside the student's field of study, as the speaker claims? I agree with the statement insofar as their majors are ensured to be studied deeply and I believe studying various courses may have a lot of merits in many respects. Nevertheless, imposing these courses on students will lead to some problems about their rights and educational quality.-----------------------To begin with, I agree that taking a variety of courses outside the major is beneficial to both the individuals and society. First of all, for individuals, one of the most important purposes of true education is to give the students a wider view about the world. The world is so complex that no one single field could explain it completely. Therefore, a variety of courses can help students to understand the whole world better. In addition, there is a phenomenon that many students' majors are not their true interests, because lacking enough understanding of these fields, they don't know which they truly like, and their majors are decided by their parents for better jobs. By exploring the different fields, they may find their true interests and develop the gifts. Then they will be motivated to study harder and become more excellent. Moreover, many fields are interrelated and studying various courses can help them to develop the interdisciplinary and reach the academic goals. So they need a lot of composed experts in industrial production and environmental protection. So, only by studying a variety courses in different fields, the students can master more knowledge and skills to solve these complex problems. ----------------------However, although universities should provide this opportunity for all students to take a variety of courses, these courses should not be imposed on them. The cost of affording the extra tuition fees is prohibitively high, and the difficulty involved in ensuring the quality and effects are insurmountable. First of all, the cost of these various courses may be very high. For instance, a university in China stipulates that the tuition fees of extra courses cost 300 yuan for each credit hour, and usually, one course has more than 3 credits. The high cost is a large burden for a poor family. Secondly, every student should have some freedom to select their own courses. If a student only like the courses of his or her major, the various courses will add much pressure to him or her. Thirdly, the most worrying problem is that a number of courses outside their majors, occupying much time, may lead to negative effects.
