ISSUE34"Instead of requiring students to take courses in a variety of disciplines—that is, courses ranging from the arts and the humanities to the physical and biological sciences—colleges and universities should allow students to enroll only in those courses that will help prepare them for jobs in their chosen fields. Such concentration is necessary in today's increasingly workoriented society"。

The speaker asserts that educational institutions should actively encourage their students to choose fields of study that will prepare them for lucrative careers. While I agree that a good and lucrative job is to some extent important for one person, I still insist that students should not choose their courses only based on the area of future job but choose courses which they are interested in.
Education plays an important role in one's life, and it is a controversial issue that whether a student should be taught courses or skills only relative to their future jobs which may be help them make a lot of money. In my opinion, the responsibilities of educational institute are not only helping students to get well prepared for their future careers, but also fostering their abilities of studying, cooperation, communication, and independently thinking and so on. Even though a job with high salary is attractive and seems to increase a person's and his family's reputation, it may be not preferred by the person. Unfortunately, as a result, the person could not insist on this job for a long time and he may feel disappointed or frustrated by some difficulties or problems during working. Obviously, the consequence may do harm to a person's whole life. In addition, as he has only focus on one specific field, he may have trouble in trying to find another job in his future.
Beyond that, there are more serious problems which might result from the narrow study area. Firstly, it may seem to be a promising field when a student choose their major fields of study, however, there are lots of unpredictable changes in future. One cannot guarantee that jobs the economic area or internet company will always be the most lucrative ones. When coming across economic depression, like these years' depression all over the world, students who choose these areas also have difficulties to get a high-paying job. Furthermore, if most students are encouraged by educational institutions to choose fields of study with promising jobs, the people of such areas may become excessive. On the contrary, some other less lucrative careers could not find enough qualified people to involved in. As a consequence, the development of the society will become unbalanced.
In fact, many fields are related to each other, so that students should be encouraged to learn comprehensive knowledge and something they are interested in, as well as social ability, in order to be more competitive and prepared for the indefinite future. In a nutshell, educational institutions should not merely encourage their students to choose fields of study that will prepare them for lucrative careers. More advisably, they should help students to find their own interests and learn comprehensive social skills and thinking methods to get prepared for their future.
