ISSUE5"A nation should require all its students to study the same national curriculum until they enter college rather than allow schools in different parts of the nation to determine which academic courses to offer"。

Educational issues can always cause heated disscussiona in our contry, since education determines the future of a nation and policy changes greatly influence every family. There is a statement that a nation should reqiure all of its students to study the same national curriculum before college. Although national curriculum owns some merits, I think this practice will harm the diversity of students and freedom of education. Besides, a single standard national curriculum may not suitable for different regions.Every student is unique indivdual with different talents, interests and personality traits. They should be treated differently; educators should not expect all the students know how to solve equations, but some students who want further study in maths should have the opportunity to learn advanced mathematic course before college. If states or even schools can decide what their students should learn and provide various selective courses, it would be better for students to develop their interests. In my high school, students can take an extracurricular course in which students research on topics they are interested. I benefited a lot from this course. Through disscusing with classmates, looking for information, and conducting a survey, I learned how to make group working efficiently, how to get the resourses we need from the massive information, and how to design a reliable and valid questionnaire. I think the national curriculum policy would be difficult to carry out, because different regions will have controversy on what the curriculum should be. Some developed regions or cosmopolis may want to include advanced courses in Spanish, biology, music, international relations and so on. However, some other less-developed regions cannot open such courses for their students, because the local government do not have enough budget for hiring foreign teachers and purchasing teaching facilities. Hence, considering the different educational and economical conditions, different regions should be allowed to decide their own curriculum. 'I think using our own curriculum is much better', an officer of educational deparment explaines, 'Mianyang is a city of areospace. We have aircraft samples and prototypes in museums and laboratory, which other cities do not have. So we can add some interesting courses like aircraft introduction, model airplane making.'Although I disagree with the adoption of national curriculum, I adimt national curriculum has some benefits. First, it decreases the expense on writing texbooks, since the same textbooks can be used in the whole country. Second, students learn as much knowledge as others at schools, in some degree, national curriculum gurantees the education equality. Last, if students in different regions study the same curriculum, catching up the coursework would not be a big problem for transfer students. However, the advantages of national curriculum mentioned above are at the sacrifice of students' diversity and education freedom. In sum, I disagree with the recommendation of national curriculum. Anyway, the purpose of education is not to enable every student master certain knowledge, but to help students develop indepent thinking and find their interest.
